You have the skills and tips to identify opportunities and utilize them to your betterment.

Plan your professional journey from your college days. Waiting until graduation could be disastrous because you might end up lacking the necessary skills. You also sharpen your skills and identify a specialization or combination that will get you the job you desire. Take internship opportunities to learn about the industry and what is required. You will be ready for work by the time you graduate.

Enhance your qualification. You will graduate in a class of 50 or even 100 with the same qualification. Another cohort will do the same in another college or university. However, you will all be competing for the same job. You need to go the extra mile to get additional skills. They could be in another language, technology, accounting and other soft skills that make you more productive.

Step out of the crowd and become a specialist. Do not remain at the level you graduated because you are too many there. Being a specialist in a field enhances your marketability. Since you are few in the industry, you gain the confidence of people who assign you duties. You have more confidence when you work and have a competitive edge over so many people.

Network with people in your industry to remain updated about industry demands and the opportunities that arise. People making a reentry into the work environment need to network a great deal. Their years outside the profession mean that there are sharper and skilled persons who have replaced them. This means that you cannot compete fairly during an interview. You can only rely on the knowledge of your peers to curve your place in the industry.

Upgrade your skills from time to time. By five or so years, new information has emerged in the market and the work place requirements will change. Update your knowledge by taking an extra course or attending seminars. When you sit down to interview for a new job or promotion, the panel must get an idea of an updated employee who will deliver excellent value to the organization. Do not shock them with your ignorance.

There are opportunities to grab and others to pass. Not every opportunity that comes your way will add value to your professional journey. Others appear good but end up being the worst decision you make in life. Avoid rushing through promotions because you will lack the experience and be too expensive to employ. Know when to move up and when to take a horizontal move. A fulfilling career is one that is calculated.

Consult specialists in careers from the earliest opportunity. Keep them close to you when making major career decisions. This helps you to make calculated moves that add value to your professional life. Mentors will also hold your hand as you make your way through the path of working life.
